Writer’s Workshop. Dancer for Money.

by Dumb Mom on March 1, 2012

Yeah, not in this lifetime.

Not like I didn’t try to hone my skill though.

I gave becoming a dancer the old college try.

Literally.

Back in college I had a roommate who was a dancer.

She was amazing on her feet and I was envious of her ability to work the kitchen floor of our apartment with her tap shoes.

Accept for when she did it in the middle of the night in preparation for a class final.  Or a performance.  Or just for fun.  Because she clearly hated me a little and wanted to ruin my much needed beauty sleep.

Then I wasn’t even remotely envious.  I wanted to sweep her legs.  Both of them.  And break the taps right offa those ever loving tap shoes.

I never did that though.  She was bigger than me a great and talented friend.

She convinced me one semester to sign up for a Flamenco dancing class with her.

It’ll be fun, she said.

You’ll love it, she promised.

It’s an excellent way to work off that freshman 15 you’ve been hanging onto for 3 years get some exercise, she encouraged.

So, having a bit of free time in my otherwise strenuous schedule, I decided to enroll in the stupid little Flamenco dance class with her.

To prove that I am awesome one the dance floor.

And to just have one class that wasn’t intense and serious.

I needed a break from academic intensity and seriousness.

Only, that’s not what I got.

I mean, it wasn’t academically challenging (it was pass/fail, meaning if you came and tried, no matter how horrible you were, you were going to pass), but it was still intense.

And, because it was so freakin’ hard, I had my serious face on from start to finish.

Intensity and seriousness are not my idea of a fun time dancing.

I swear, Flamenco dancing is nothing like booty dancing in the club.  Because booty dancing at the club, which I excell at, is not even remotely intense or serious (unless you’re that one chick who takes droppin’ it like it’s hot to that probably-soft-porn level; which I’m not).

In Flamenco dancing, you have to do something specific with your hands.   And then your feet have to stomp and turn and stomp again, just so.

And then there’s your hips.

Shakira was right!  They don’t lie!

And, if you mess them up while Flamenco dancing (or hideously attempting to) they will sell you out so fast your head will spin.

Which is what mine was doing every single moment I spent in that silly little class.

If you asked the instructor, or my roommate, or any of my classmates, they would tell you that I spent  most of my time sweating like a fiend, despite being frozen in place in the back of the classroom.

They thought it was freaky that someone barely moving could sweat so very much.

But, here’s what they didn’t know: I was moving.

So fast they couldn’t even see me!  That’s how I was working up such a sweat.

Hyper speed, baby.  Hy.  Per.  Speed.

Faster than the eye can see.

At least that’s what my brain was telling me.  As it completely paralyzed my body.

I went to 2 class sessions.

The second one being worse than the first.  Because they wanted us to add another  count to the 16 we learned on day one.

Wasn’t happening for me, since I’d really only filed away the first 4 counts on day one anyway.

I dropped that class like a bad habit before class three was even a consideration and I’ve never set foot in a dance class since.

I’ve determined that I’m more of a freestylist.  Or a, um, Just Dance-ist depending on whether the venue is a local night club or my living room carpet.

Maybe I was over thinking it?  Maybe I just like to raise the roof?

Either way, I’ve decided, some things just can’t be taught.

This reminds me of when I was in college and got roped into taking CardioFunk Aerobics with my roommate!! I am good at neither cardio nor funk. I was not at all an A student in this class as my funk factor was not registering. I made it through the semester and got my gym credit but I couldn’t believe for the life of me that the class CardioFunk aerobics pulled down my GPA! thanks for sharing your story. Brought back memories!!

I’m largely devoid of funk myself. Hard to believe, I know. But true! Totally! And I’m so happy I dropped that class when I did. I woulda been peeved if it ruined my GPA!

Over the years, Flamenco dancing has called to me, but I never work up the nerve. I’m far too uncoordinated, and have realised that I’m fine with just watching. It is a lovely dance to watch, though, isn’t it?

I was told roller skating was fun so I tried it and had the same experience as you–too much work, serious face, intense, deep thought–no, not fun. Now, racquetball–that’s FUN! No thinking because that ball moves so fast, you just react.

I always wanted to dance but never had the rhythm or talent. I once took a dance class with my sister and her husband and enjoyed it only because my brother in law was a much worse dancer than I was. Only time I was ever a better dancer than anyone!

I can shake my booty on the dance floor, but I definitely can’t follow steps in a class! Good on you for giving it a go – wish you had some pictures though :)

I seriously laughed out loud at the part about you moving so fast they just couldn’t see you.

I like to pretend I’m an awesome dancer…when in fact, I probably look like I’m having seizures on the dance floor. ;-)

I would have joined you in the back of the room – sweating furiously while not moving. Love it! I want to try salsa but my children cry when I dance. I might just let it be. Or maybe I’ll try booty dancing. ;)

I used to go to Jazzercise with my mother when I was younger (wannabe Pat Benatar headband and all). I’ve always had affection for dancing (which is probably why we have a nightly dining room, after dinner dance off). I took ballet, jazz, tap, and modern until my mid-teens when I discovered I actually was NOT going to be the next Alvin Ailey dancer. Yes, it took me that long to figure that out; I’d only had minimal lessons but you couldn’t tell me I wasn’t good enough). Anyway, I am cracking up at you moving faster than their eyes. I interrupted my daughter and niece discussing the difference between the booty clap and the booty pop. IT’S ABOUT TO BE SOME BOOTY SMACKING! Do some damn homework. And how do you even know the difference (is there a difference?!)

I would love to try ballroom dancing. I’ll watch the competitions when they come one (strangely, though, I have no interest in Dancing With the Stars. Hmmm).

This one is getting tweeted out, because you made me l.a.u.g.h. o.u.t.l.o.u.d. Dancing so fast… hy per speed. No wonder you were perspiring, which by the way, is what us ladies do. Thanks for the post today. Loved it!

I took badminton in college. Surprisingly I had the same experience as you did in Flamenco.

You’re a better sport than I am. My middle names are uncoordinated and awkward!! I have zero sense of dance style. So good for you, for even trying twice!

Love this post.
Dance lessons are no joke. Went on vacation once, and it rained the entire time, so the only thing to do was learn Swing. I could barely move afterwards. But, foolishly, those lessons led me to believe that I am an Excellent Swing Dancer….until I saw myself on a friends wedding video, and almost passed out from embarrassment. Now, the only dance floor that will get my moves is in the kitchen.

I think you were brave and courageous to take the class. I took swing dance lessons for awhile and the instructor said I lead my partners off the beat.

Loved this! I was pretty much laughing the whole time. I had a similar experience in Jazz class. I went to one class and decided I couldn’t take the humiliation or the added stress :/

Dance is definitely a talent and skill that needs some sort of gene in your body to deliver on timing and rhythm and whatever. I’m pretty sure I have less dance skills than I think I do. I know I got jipped on that and have laughable skills. But it’s lots of fun trying. Especially when the kids convince me to play Just Dance Kids 2 or Just Dance 3. Pretty sure those games are legal parent torture kits.

This sounds much like my Beginning Jazz Dance story. Only it wasn’t pass/fail. It was for a grade. I got an A because it was a 7:00 a.m. class and I was on time every time. But the teacher used to get so frustrated she had to turn away. I tried, though.

Never did figure it out. I always did fine at the country bar.

No way could I take a dance class. I tried zumba and nearly killed myself bollywood style.

I love it when you post old school pictures of yourself. You totally embraced the times.

I have ALWAYS wanted to try flamenco dancing!!! Now you have me scared though… as I have nooooo rhythm whatsoever. Kudos to you for literally giving it the old college try!

Now if there had been a college class offering cocktails, low lighting, and club music, I would have done really well with that one!! The moment I have to follow steps and rules, I can’t do it.

OMG, this too funny. I have always wanted to take flamenco dancing, I saw it done once and thought I could do that. I Love Dancing, me and the kids are always doing some little dance around the house. I love Latin Dancing, so I get my fix with Zumba and my hip hop fix with BodyJam at the Gym. This way I get my dance fix without having some random guy trying to grind up on me (which my hubby would disapprove of anyway, lol).

When I was 22 after y son was born, my best friend Sara thought I needed to get back into shape while she got her bod in shape for her wedding. So, we signed up for Aikido. Sara and I were the oldest “kids” in the class by 10 years. We were flipped and karate chopped by 12 year old boys for 3 solid hours. The Russian instructor told me ” If you can push a baby from your vagina, you can do this!” Seriously???? “For the record coach, I had a c-section!!!!” That class was misery and I blame that coach and all of those 12 year olds for later infertility trouble :) LOL
