Because you know what? It so totally just is.
I know some people are crazy faced not as lady gaga over their iPads as I am, but I honestly just don’t get that.
Because I love mine. Love. Love. Love-itty-love-love. My Precious.
It completes me in a way that nothing else has in the past. You know, nothing inanimate, because I know it’s just and object and people mean more than blah-blah-blah things.
But, you know, of my things, this is really truly my all time most favoritest (not counting my cell phone which as a human, I really just could not live with out. And, don’t give me that well-what-do-you-think-people-did-before-cell-phones lecture, because honestly, I don’t know as I’ve blocked pre-cell phone time of my life out and just can’t go back to that freaky, scary, apocalyptic sort of place again).
Anyway, all of you Microsoft cabillionaires reading my blog (I know you’re out there) should totally be paying me for this (which, for the FCC record, they totally are not, and if they were I’d be bragging about it emphatically) with free apps and music downloads because I can go on for days about this thing.
There are just so many things to love about the iPad.
- iPads are light weight. Bonus for me because it meant I didn’t have to take the heaviest laptop ever made on my recent trip to CA. Seriously, when I went to NYC pre-iPad days, I walked around like Quasimodo for two days from carrying big-as-my-desktop HP from Hell with me.
- iPads (like all things Mac) are intuitive. Most importantly, autocorrect recognizes the words crap and douche. My cell phone constantly changes those definitive members of the English language to clap and touch making my response to BFFs recent man troubles read, "clap he is such a touch, eff him". Makes me sound like a clap head touch myself.
- iPad batteries last forever and ever. Let’s go back to the aforementioned trip. When I arrived, cell phone was deader than a door nail (thanks to texting and tweeting in the airport), but happy little iPad? Still at like 65%!
- iPads are FUN (and useful for work, but who even cares about that?!), for the entire family!
And they make you smarter and more popular and prettier and more fragrant too. I’m not entirely convinced they won’t one day do something amazing like cure the common cold and/or erectile dysfunction.*I kid you not, The Dudes spend as much time on this thing as I do (when I let them). And, I’m not just talking about #1 either. All three of them enjoy it equally and it certainly comes in handy educationally.
For example, I’ve downloaded a number of math facts apps for #1. He’s been struggling with them in school and we’ve ramped up his at home practice. But he gets bored with the flash cards, and some days he and I both want to toss those never ending things in the fireplace. So this mixes it up a little. Plus, it’s portable so, when we’re waiting at the doctors office or the DMV (please don’t let me have to test this theory by actually going to the DMV any time soon) we can just whip it out and practice.
Same with #2 and his sight words.
But our most favorite thing to do with the iPad is downloading books.
Fine. So our second favorite thing, right behind playing Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja, is downloading books.
It’s just so easy for on the go reading, and it allows for variety your at home book collection may not.
I mean don’t get me wrong, I love the feeling of a real book in my hands, and I want The Dudes to appreciate that too. But, I don’t love having to read Good Night Moon every single night for the rest of my natural life and the iPad apps let me spice it up for them.
Recently, Patuto Press (the make apps and stuff) contacted me to review one of their iPad book apps for kids.
Up until that point we were exclusively using iBooks and the Nook for Kids (which is pretty fan-freaking-tastic on its own) so I was stoked to learn that there are many other options for selecting children’s books for the iPad, and many of them are just 99 cents.
The book we reviewed, Bella Goes Bump in the Night (not THAT Bella), is definitely for the older elementary schoolset (some of the images are tres creepy). #1 was pleased with the title and it led us to explore a number of other books in the collection.
I liked the fun in Frida’s World (The Dudes declared it for girls immediately).
#3 enjoyed A Monster Named Criney Who Makes Kids Whiney
#2 liked King Bartholomew and the Jester’s Riddle.
There really are tons of options! And, a number of them are available for the iPhone too if you haven’t gotten your iPad yet?!
But, you should because, in case you can’t tell, the iPad is definitely receiving the Dumb Mom stamp of awesomeness (I think I really should like make a stamp, that would be, um awesome, no?!).
So, expect more app reviews soon.
Not because they are paying me (oh how I wish), just because I feel like I’ve found the fountain of youth or the Holy Grail or some other Indiana Jonesy type treasure with this thing, and you know how I like to brag about treasures!
What apps do you love for yourself or your kids (they don’t have to be explicitly for the iPad)?
I’m excited to try out more!
*The iPad probably doesn’t cure anything other than boredem so don’t go blaming me if you buy the iPad and you still get sniffly after your kid puts his hand in your mouth, or if your man still can’t do the wild thing. Not. My. Fault. Or the iPad’s.

I second that! Off to check out that book on my iPad
Every time an iPad commercial comes on, I stop what I’m doing and drool like that thing is made of chocolate or something.
I WANT ONE!!!
Can I join in your “I’m totally ga-ga over my iPad” club?
That is …. when I get one?
Husband wanted to wait until the ‘next version’ came out. I’m sitting on pins and needles. ARGH!
I want to know ALL ABOUT it …. like what apps you have, if you have a wireless keyboard, etc, etc, etc.
I don’t have a wireless keyboard, but that does sound very nice. Some peopl hate th iPad keyboard but as a former textaholic (okay, not former, current) I don’t find it that annoying or difficult to use.
As for apps I can say that my current face is kindle for iPad just because there are so many more titles available there than ther are on iBooks. The Dudes love Talking Tom Cat which was fun for me for about 8 seconds, and the Marvel Comic app b/c they love comics. I let Dude #1 take it to bed last night so he could read the first spiderman!
I concur, I love my iPad! In fact, I am using it right now! I have not traveled with it yet but am in a few weeks and can’t wait. I am going o check out the book recommendations. Apps I love:
1. Flipboard-coolest thing ever!!
2. Letter tracer (my son just turned 4 and he uses this to learn letters)
3. Informant HD
4. Talking T-Rex (the boy loves this too)
5. Hello hello language on the go – Spanish
6. Nightstand
Please share any others you love!
It’s a little bit sad how excited I am to check out all of the apps you suggested. I think we have the cat version of the t-Rex one you mentioned but the rest are new to me! Thanks for the suggestions!
Thanks so much for the Flipboard suggestion! I downloaded it earlier and I love it already!
You are welcome! Glad you like it, it’s one of my favs.
I took your suggestion and got Nook Kids. I was also inspired to go to the Apple site and browse their recommendations and I got Epicurious (reipes) and another one for my tot (I think it’s called Alphabet Fun). Call me obsessed.
I have the docking keyboard and like it, but don’t use it all the time.
If you run across any other apps you can’t live without, please share!
So you aren’t giving away an I-Pad and I’m commenting anyway? Imagine that?
Great minds think alike…just finished my post on the Nook (or the book?)
I did notice one itty bitty draw back to an e-reader that you don’t have to worry about with a book. You know when you’re on an airplane and they say turn off electronic device for take off and landing? That eliminates a giod 30 minutes of reading traditional book readers get to take advantage of. I mean, I used it to sleep, because for some reason I always fall asleep at takeoff and landing, but still. I was a little jealous of people with books for that. It’s cool though because I’m guess at points, like when my book turned into a movie watching machine, they were pretty jealous too!
For me it was love the minute it hit my hands. Hi, I am a mommy of 6 and I am addicted to my ipad. Its the greatest invention for mommies and kiddos and ipad stealing hubbies since…ever. Recently the hubby and I and some other family members traveled with the 6 kids in a van for THIRTEEN hours with 2 ipads, 2 ipods, and 2 iphones…the trip was delightful! And yes, I can confirm that it even works to occupy active little boys in the DMV!
I honestly can’t imagine even having 6 kids, let alone 6 kids in an iPad free house! Good to know that my iPad will come in handy if I’m ever trapped in a car for 13 hours with an insane amount of people or forced to renew my driver’s license. Really I just hope to not have to experiment with either scenario. You must have nerves of steel lady! I’m more rubber band-y in that department:)
I love my iPad too! We play “Doom” on ours all the time, and my 11 year old loves to draw on it. I am anxious to learn about other apps to enjoy!
Have you tried Flipboard yet?! Someone suggested it previously and I donwloaded it immediately. LOVE it! Think I’ll talk about it next week!
Jdaddy asked what I wanted for my birthday next month and I totally want an iPad. But I won’t ask for it.
Seems too glamorous, considering we’ll be in Cancun on my actual birthday. Dammit.
I can’t say that I’d trade my iPad for a trip to Cancun (yes, I like it that much), but I am a little bit jealous of you!
Enjoy Cancun. and happy birthday!
I got my iPad for my 40th and I am not ashamed to admit that I pimped out on my facebook status that was what I wanted, so I received a ton of gift cards to the Apple store. (My hubby said he wouldn’t buy me one because I am already obsessed with my iPhone and he didn’t want to feed my addicition).
A girls gotta do what a girls gotta do.
I want an iPad so bad I can taste it. Like…the same way I crave potato chips when Aunt Flo comes to visit, ya know? But seriously…I don’t have one. I don’t even have an iPhone.
Please…feel sorry for me now.
I don’t have an iPhone either and I’ve been all attached to my Blackberry for a while now. But, since everything is all compatible, I feel like I should look into the whole iPhone thing now. Just for continuity sake.
tee hee hee!! i just got an ipad yesterday for me birthday!
Do you live it yet?!
YES i very much live it yit! in fact i looked at ur recommendations for apps. or maybe it was someone else’s suggestions. either way, i just bought the cuuuuuutest vera bradley bag to carry my new BFF in! i think i’ll give her a name…
“give her a name”….LOVE that!
I just returned my iPad. I know I didnt’ give it enough time to really work it’s magic, but due to a ER bill for son’s broken arm and some other Holiday “fun” it just seemed like the best thing to do. Mostly though I was disappointed with the blogging capability. I’m sure there is an app I should have downloaded, but since DS broke his arm the day after xmas, I pretty much knew it had to go back anyway and didn’t really want to fall in love… Bummed, but maybe next year ( or when hubs starts that business that’s going to make him rich – when was that going to happen again?)
While I did have it – my favorites were Mahjong and the Barnes and Noble Nook app.
That sucks that your son broke his arm the day after Christmas?! How did that happen?! Snowboarding?! Please don’t tell me it was snowboarding b/c Santa brought The Dudes boards for Christmas and they haven’t had a chance to try them yet. I’m scared when the time finally comes.
LOl- no – not snowboards. My parents bought the kids these really cool Heely type things that attached to any shoes & light up when you skate. DS (6) was trying to keep up with sister (9) and slipped in our kitchen. Not the first broken arm we’ve experienced! Our kids are way active, so I guess it just comes with the territory.
And, although it sounded “woe is me” I really just wasn’t as enamored with the iPad as I thought I would be so returned it. If I had loved it, I would have kept it – we could afford it. I guess I just had really hyped up expectations. I hate it when that happens. I am ALWAYS disappointed!
You obviously have your iPad priorities right. Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, THEN iBooks.
That’s the way it is in our house, too. Damn those Angry Birds.
i dont need an angry bird. we have angry mommy.
Daria brought up a good point, is there a Blog app I should know about?
I don’t have a fancy, shmancy iPad, but I did get a Nook for Christmas and I love it so much. It is now like an extension of my hand. I was wondering about the children’s books, but I figured if I downloaded any then I would have to share and I’m totally not into sharing my awesome stuff with the kids… or anyone else really. Mine has the wireless so I can connect to the internet, but I haven’t really tried anything out on it yet. I’m pretty sure I can download different stuff to it (obviously not as much as the iPad), but I’m not sure how to do it. I need to research it more.
You aren’t rubbing it in, right?
Because apple still doesn’t love me. One day, the fruit company will have a presence in our house. For now, nada.
Funny post! I don’t have an iPad, only an iPhone, but I’m completely happy with it. My current favorite app is Intuition. Tagged as mom’s personal assistant, it’s a free (free!) task management app with lots of features esp. designed for moms, like Location Alerts (a convenient way to be reminded of to-dos) and Community (where moms can share tips with each other). It also looks really cute and is easy to use. I think you should try it. You can check it out on http://www.iconapps.com/product.htm
