How to Take Awesome Photos. Photo Tips Moms Need.

by Dumb Mom on October 5, 2010

Really, I should have just titled this post: How to Take Awesome Photos Of Things That Move (but nobody Googles that!).

Like your kids.

Or your pets.

Or just stuff.

Because, as I’m sure all of you who have actually tried to take excellent photos of stuff that moves know, it’s no easy task.

And, even if they agree to hold relatively still for like 8-10 seconds while you snap a shot or two, capturing photos of your kids (or your pets) that you will love for years to come is tough.

You know because they do that fugly lookin’ fake smile-grimace-growl thingy that makes ‘em look like they have turd-tongue despite the fact that you’ve coached them through tons of times move.

So, Dumb Mom (aka @thenagainphoto on Twitter for a reason) is here to lend a helping hand!

Now, I’m not gonna say that after reading this every person is going to be able to take stunningly gorgeous kid photos (I’ve been earning my lattes doing photography for two full years already and I still don’t think I’m all that).  Because, way I see it, photography is similar to other art.

It’s the artist,  NOT THE CAMERA (although it does help) that is taking the photos.  To me, when people say insulting things like, “You have such a good camera and I wish I had one too so I could take photos like you” it’s the camera, it’s like saying Picasso was the shiz because he used kicka$$ paint brushes.

Um, riiight. It was the brushes.

So yeah, you follow these rules and you probably won’t wind up being able to take shots like me a notable professional, but you might be better at it a little at least.

Dumb Mom’s Guide to Taking Awesome Photos of Your Kids Even if They Move A Lot and Smile Ugly Refuse to Smile

1.  Don’t Be Scurd.  I am a self taught photographer which basically means that I learned everything I know from using the crap outta my camera.  My first year with my first DSLR I took over 6000 photos with it.  And lots of those were of the same thing: The Dudes.  I encourage people who are trying to improve their photography to try tons of different shots with the same subject.  Stand on a rock, lay on the ground, tilt your camera, get closer.

Don’t be afraid to experiment.  If it sucks you can always just erase it and pretend it never happened.

2.  Let ‘em Work It.  Great photos don’t need to be overly posed to be awesome, and they don’t have to be perfect.  As a matter of fact, I believe quite the opposite to be true.  The Dudes have been expertly trained in how to “work the camera” and “shaking what your mama gave you”.  And, I graduate kids from the Dumb Mom School of Workin’ It on a regular basis!

Even better, don’t even let ‘em know you’re there.  Capturing candid, kids on-the-go shots is a pretty good recipe for great photos too!

3.  Get A Prop.  Not an okey looking sleigh like “that-one-photo-studio” likes to use.

Something natural, and fun, and indicative of your kid’s personal style would be WAY better.

4.  Be Fun.  Wear bright colors.  Make a funny face.  Tell a joke.  Capture an action shot.  There’s not a law that says your family photos have to be overly posed shots of you, your husband, and your kids wearing khaki shorts and white shirts on the beach.  Put your daughter in snazzy, bright tights.  Have your husband toss your son on in the air.  Family photos are supposed to be unique to the family, not propped up in front of a gray backdrop like every. Single. Person. Before you.

5.  Relax.  Let’s say you get the kids dressed in their finest duds and head out to the park for a “shoot” only to arrive and have someone throw a tantrum, slip in mud, or refuse to smile.  So you will want to toss them off a bridge the heck what.  Let ‘em scream, take their shirt off (provided they are male or at least haven’t started sprouting boobies yet!), snap pictures of their pouty faces.

The shots may come out MUCH cuter than you imagined, you will probably appreciate the story that goes along with them (one day), and if they do wind up sucking badly, you can delete them and go back next weekend.

Bonus tip: Edit those bad boys.  I mean really, do you think my photos come straight outta my camera with this sassy little vintage feel on ‘em.  Um, no.  I go into my handy daddy photo editing software program that costs a pinky toe or two and edit them like a mofo.  Ain’t no shame in my game.  And there shouldn’t be in yours either.  Because you too could be the owner of edited to cuteness shots like these with just the press of a button or, em like 18 buttons, to be something like exact!  Point is, there is nothing wrong with post processing your photos to up their awesome.  All the pros do it and you can too!

Great tips! My kids hate to sit still .. or look at the camera. I get a lot of shots of the backs of heads or blurs as they run away. I have a pouty photo like yours too- which by the way is ADORABLE! And lastly, I love, love LOVE photoshop! When my second child was an infant and in that up-at-all-ungodly-hours age, I spent my late, sleepless, nights watching tutorials and learning to use photoshop. Best waste of time in front of my computer ever!

Not still photos are better, trust me! Sitting still photos often wind up on Awkward Family Photos and no one wants that! We can work on the whole running away blur thing.

Your pictures are beautiful and those are great tips. I especially agree with the wear bright colors. I tend to edit as little as possible- I never like them as well after they are edited but I always love other photographer’s edited images.

Artistic editing only. I don’t like when baby faces look all over smooth or over bright. Everyone knows they’re covered in hair like disgruntled little shrews. We love them anyway so why try to hide it?!

I love your tips. And I love that you are a fellow self-taught photog. I take way too many pictures (evident by my over-loaded hard drive).

I love editing, too. Now that I edit, it’s hard to imagine showing my pictures naked.

Naked pictures make it on my blog from time to time because I am lazy and sad. They NEVER make it to a customer’s house though. That would just be wrong.

That first picture is just so awesome!! I love his little Buddha body.

Great tips. Now, can you teach me to use my camera??

The baby in the first photo is so freaking adorable that I want to snatch him up and take him home. I need to practice more. I just get disappointed when I think I’ve caught this great image only to see that it was crap after I download it. Either I missed the expression or the lighting was wrong or whatever. I really, really need to learn more about lighting. I think that is probably one of the number one reasons my pictures turn out crappy.

Lighting. Check! I’ll cover that soon. Maybe not next, but sooooon!

Thanks for those tips. I try to get photos of monkey but when I get into a good position he ends up running after me and the camera. Gotta keep trying…I know.

I hate those posed photos too. I’m trying to get Mr. Man to go with outdoor photography but he likes order. Sigh. Sometimes I wonder how we got married…we are so opposite. :)

The hubs and I are gonna have some beef I think. Tell him to call me, so we can talk.

None of my photos are edited EVER.

Jealous?

I’M NOT LYING!

…great tips lady!

I know you aren’t lying because the same is true for me. Some of us are just born with flawless skin and the innate ability to “smile with our eyes”. Me. You. We’re those people. Fierceness is a gift. Ask Tyra.

I am learning to bend down to the image at eye level and also to see past the image and look at the background, such a learning curve. Thanks for these great tips.

You’re welcome! Lay on the ground. Get all dirty and icky and in there. It always makes for interesting shots.

Your photos are just beautiful. Wanna come and take my picture? :)

You betcha. I’d love the chance to photograph your kids. They look fun! Maybe that’s because they are super far away and I can’t actually hear them through my computer, but maybe not?! You look like you’re having a blast. Except for when you don’t:)

I wish you could take some fabulous pictures of me. Oh and my kids and hubby. :)

I can’t take pictures of people who are better looking than me. Goes against my moral code. Find someone else, missy.

Reply

Kristy October 5, 2010 at 7:15 pm

Love it! Yes, I’m thinking the best thing is to just chase them around and snap a lot!

Reply

Dumb Mom October 5, 2010 at 8:22 pm

Yep. And be fast. It’s the only way. Oh and bribery. That works well too!

Yuliya October 5, 2010 at 8:15 pm

These are great, thank you! My fave has to be pouty face, better than fake smile any day!

Reply

Dumb Mom October 5, 2010 at 8:22 pm

Fake smile is my archenemy. Ruins an expertly crafted photo with a quickness!

Great tips. My girls have become very strange picture takers lately. I can never get them to smile at the same time, maybe I should let it go for a while and see what happens :) I am loving your blog.

I just wonder, do you ever look at a photo (that you’ve taken) so many times, that you eventually tire of it and forget how awesome it is? I do that sometimes. And I have to tell you, that photo of Dude #3 with the cups in the water is A.W.E.S.O.M.E. If that were my photo, I’d probably look at it every single day and keep picking it apart – should I have brightened it? Added more vibrance? Contrast? But it is truly perfect. LOVE it.
