How to Make Cake Pops BY dummies

by Dumb Mom on April 3, 2010

I’ve decided to change my name.

Maybe just temporarily.

Still figuring out the particulars.

But, for now, for today at least, I’m not going to answer to Dumb Mom (or Blog World Dominatrix!).

Instead I’d like to be referred to as Domestic Uber-Mom Boss (which somehow still winds up with me being DUMB).

Anyway.  I feel I have earned the right to go by a fancy new name.

And, not just because I’ve taken to wearing this Flirty Apron around.

_MG_2972_15

Well maybe.

Maybe it is exactly because I’ve taken to wearing this Flirty Apron around.

Because maybe the Flirty Apron is magic.

Dunno.

But I do know that the day this Flirty Apron arrived in my mailbox that is so far away from my doorstep that I usually have to drive my car to retrieve my mail on my doorstep I have been touched my the Bakerella Fairy.

_MG_2965_12

That’s right peeps.

_MG_2957_17

I’ve gone all cake pop in this biotch.

But mine are more awesome (aka better).

Bold statement.  I know.

I don’t mean they taste better (although they may, as I’ve never actually had the privilege of sampling the Bakerella version), or look better (I blame my shaky hands for that), or anything of that nature.

I mean they are awesomer because it is entirely unlike me to create anything this amazing.

And, my sharing of them with you is what really sets me apart from the Bakerella’s and the Pioneer Women of the world, because I don’t just show you the gorgeously lit, expertly propped, designed with time and quiet and space, final version of the pops.

To make them more relatable to the everyday mom, I show you the Dumb Mom cake pop outtakes.  The messy dishes, the cluttered background, the authentic fails of the cake pop creation process.

_MG_2944_10

The baby “helper” who thinks helping is another way of saying stuffing your face…

_MG_2908_3

The nearly-as-important-as-the-final-product stuff.

That way, should you decide to undertake this task yourself, you will know that sometimes when you get the chocolate covering too hot, the stupid-effing-stupid-head-stupid cake drops right offa the stick and you have to fish it out with your fingers and that’s okay.

_MG_2943_9

No biggie (because licking your fingers is the best part).

So you ruin one.

Or twelve five.

They still taste criminally delicious.

And, since you only need 10 for your kid’s thank you cards anyway you get to enjoy the fails all by your lonesome while you work on the perfect ones you need to take for the world to gush over enjoy (don’t worry, you’ll have plenty, the recipe makes like 50 of the things!).

Voila…  Dumb Mom Cake Pops in a Flirty Apron

_MG_2974_16

I used a variation of this Bakerella Cake Pop Recipe.

Here are my If-I-can-do-it-a-dummy-can pointers:

1.  Cook your cake all the way (even a little over done is okay).  If you leave it moist they won’t work as well.

2.  Use cream cheese frosting.  It tastes the yummiest.

3.  Don’t make them too big.  You want them to be able to fit entirely into your mouth without having to dislocate your jaw to make it happen.  And, you don’t want to have to eat them in bites either; they fall off the stick that way and that’s annoying.  These are mine and some of them were definitely too big to be comfortably bite sized.  It worked out in the end because I just ate those.

_MG_2914_6

4.  Let them firm up A LOT.  When she says place them in the freezer for a while to firm she means it, otherwise you will be standing in your kitchen yelling at empty lollipop sticks and your kids and your dog and possibly some of your neighbors will be frightened.

5.  DON’T GET THE CHOCOLATE COATING TOO HOT.  Seriously, this is THE most important tip.  If it is too hot, as in burns-the-tip-of-your-pretty-little-tester-finger hot, the cake will slip right off the end of the stick when you go to dip them and then you’ll be back to doing what you were doing in #4.

6.  Tap softly.  And let them drip over the bowl for like two seconds longer than you think you should.

_MG_2930_8

7.  Don’t forget the Styrofoam.  I nearly omitted this step and that would have been a huge error.  As it was I needed like two or three more than the one I bought.

8.  Go easy on the decor.  Unless that is like your thing, and then have at it.  Here are some amazing Easter Cake Pops you have little hope of accomplishing on your first attempt, but they sure are adorable.

9.  Take your time.  These are not at all difficult to make (aside from perhaps the decorating part), but they will take most of the day (with the baking and cooling and all) from start to finish.  Don’t try to rush the cooling processes or you will hate cake pops and all they stand for.

10. Don’t Eat.  At least for a day before you make these things because they are that yummy and addictive (you can’t just eat one), and you will eat yourself pukey on these things, so free up some space in your stomach and stock up on the TP.

Now, want to win a magical-can-make-anything-while-wearing-this-beauty Flirty Apron of your own?

Well, why wouldn’t you?

They really are the cutest little things (and they have aprons for men and aprons for kids too!).  I love mine so much that I didn’t even want to wear it while cooking for fear of getting it dirty.  But then, I put it on, and I got all June-Cleaver inspired…

_MG_2971_14

Here’s how to get a Flirty Apron of your own!

1.  Buy one here: Flirty Aprons

2.  Win one form me!*

All you have to do is…

1.  Be a pBd Dumb Lover (aka a follower).

2.  Leave a comment on this post telling me what your favorite dessert is (so I can try to make it in my Flirty Apron) by 4/9/10 by midnight Eastern Standard Time and you’re in there like swimwear!

And, that’s it!

Oh!  And, I nearly forgot about the Extract DVD giveaway from last week!

There are two of you who will be laughing at Jason Bateman and friends sometime soon…

1.  Loco Yaya, and

2. @Ohgollymolly

Hey ladies have your people call my people (aka send me an email when you get a chance!).

*When I say from me, I usually mean from the company who supplied it to me to give to you.  Which also usually means that they gave me one for free to sample first.  I don’t giveaway items I haven’t tried personally, it’s like my one condition.  I’d just feel so bad if you like died from something I gave you.  Guilt pretty much rules my world.

First of all, those look absolutely delicious! Secondly, I wanna win a Flirty Apron! My favorite dessert is definitely no-bake cookies…only I love them best when they’re still in the pan and still burn-your-face-off hot.

*gasp* I was NOT following your blog and I totally thought I was!

But now I am. :) All is right with the world.

And I love popcorn. That’s my dessert of choice.

Popcorn?! Well that’s not sticky, or gooey, or shoved full of fat-belly-making calories. No wonder you look so good!

Those look awesome. I love cheesecake. I need one of those aprons to get me motivated in the kitchen. Happy Easter!

I love cheesecake too although I don’t love that I get close to pukey after like one or two pieces. I can’t get fat like that!

Those look so yummy! I could really use an apron for hose rare moments when I’m inspired to bake, or catch the oven on fire! My favorite dessert is 7-layer bars.

Reply

Dumb Mom April 3, 2010 at 4:30 pm

Well, if you win the apron this is my only requirement: remove it before you fight a fire, it’s to pretty to be engulfed in flames!

I would definitely love to win a flirty apron! I’m already a follower, and my favorite dessert is white chocolate raspberry cheesecake (this recipe is both easy and delicious!) though really any kind of cheesecake will do =)

PS-I LOVE your blog makeover!

Thanks! And, I’m not a huge lover of white choclate, but that does sound delicious. Might have to see what my magic apron can do with that!

Of course you look AWESOME in your Flirty Apron, and those pops look super yummy. And wouldn’t it be easier for you just to send me some of your cake pops? Please…. No? Well ok then.

My favorite dessert, that’s a little bit harder. I really like dessert. Like lots and lots of desserts. Warm brownies with vanilla ice cream, pound cake with strawberries and cool whip, banana pudding with nutter butters (not nilla wafers), warm peach cobbler with ice cream. I’m going to stop now before we all go into a diabetic coma.

Reply

Dumb Mom April 3, 2010 at 4:32 pm

I would send you some if they weren’t all ready all gone. I’m not much of a pound cake girl and bananas literally make me gag. But peach cobbler is SO the shiz!

Look at you in all your cute domestic Betty Crocker splendor! I have a cow-print apron … that I made in 7th grade Home Ec.

I have always wanted to make cake pops! I LOVE Bakerella! I’m really glad you posted the tips because I somehow had the sneaking suspicion that she makes it look too easy. :)

I wanna win!

I make a great margarita cheesecake. You have to have a margarita to go with it, of course. Which might be what makes it my fav.

Ok…so I already follow your blog….OF COURSE!!! I mean…I should follow the woman who promises to dominate me every so often, right???

But really…I love this apron. I want one of my own. And KUDOS to you for making cupcake pops. I have done them several times. I even blogged about them right here. http://charissej.blogspot.com/2009/02/suzy-homemaker.html And you are right. They are not hard. But they are time consuming. And tedious. And back breaking. BUT SOOOO DELICIOUS!!

Anyway…my favorite dessert…and I am not a big sweets fan as I prefer salty treats…but my favorite dessert right now…is rainbow chip frosting. It may not qualify as a dessert…but a tablespoon of that…and MMMMM I am set for like a month on sweets. :-)

Favorite dessert? Well, once I’m off this gluten/dairy/soy/egg free diet, that’s all I’ll be eating. So I’ll say a huge slab of buttercream frosting with a tiny dab of cake.

Your ‘flirty’ apron is not that flirty to me…I hope you got it for free. I went to the website where you can buy them…I expected better looking patterns that were actually flirty. Men don’t find flowers and floras sexy…note to the creator.
